Blue Hawaiian Helicopters
One of the reasons we travel is to see new things, to feel the thrill of experiencing something for the first time. Taking a helicopter tour is a great way to see the destination you visit from a different point of view. There are many places in Hawaii not accessible by roads so we took to the skies with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters for an aerial adventure of Maui and Molokai.
Blue Hawaiian Helicopters offers tours on Big Island, Kauai, Maui and Oahu and was recently voted #1 Best Helicopter Tour Company by the readers of Hawaii Magazine. They offer a variety of tours online and a full description of what you can expect to see. We knew we wanted to see waterfalls and fly over the ocean so we selected the West Maui and Molokai tour. The hour tour departs from Kahului (near the airport) and takes you above the clouds on a journey over green valleys and Maui’s mountain range across the Pailolo Channel to the island of Molokai.
It was thrilling to fly from land over the ocean. Seeing the blue waters and even catching a glimpse of several humpback whales making their annual migration from Alaska to Hawaii was an unforgettable sight!
The helicopter we flew in was an Eco-Star and very spacious. Our noise cancelling headsets played beautiful Hawaiian music and our pilot would chime in from time to time to share facts and important information about the Hawaiian islands. As we made our way to neighbor island Molokai, our pilot, who also happens to be a Hawaii State Certified Guide shared that Molokai has the world’s tallest sea cliffs. The cliffs which reach as tall as 4,000 feet are located on the north side of the island and not accessible by roads. Another reason to consider a helicopter tour when you visit Hawaii.
We noticed there were some vibrant colors in the water off the coast of Molokai and with our handheld microphones we asked the pilot about it. He explained the colors indicate the depth of the water and as the colors get darker the waters get deeper. Being able to communicate with the pilot and other passengers added to the fun!
From the friendly service to the quality of the tour and aircraft, this experience was so nice! We highly recommend Blue Hawaiian Helicopters to anyone looking for a unique way to experience Hawaii.
Maui Travel Blog tips:
- wear dark clothing so your camera doesn’t pick up reflections from the large windows
- don’t make a scuba dive reservation too close to your helicopter tour (ask reservations for more info on time between flying and diving)
- don’t forget to bring your camera, but leave the selfie sticks back at your hotel because they’re not allowed on the tour
- bring cash gratuity for the pilot
